Product Features

Aware is a desktop application for managing deep topic research of online sources. Its patent pending, context-aware search technology allows you to direct search sources toward your topic of interest to make each set of results highly targeted. And it has features to help you organize, manage and share your research with others.

Searching

Aware's patent-pending search technology learns about your research topic as you search and silently enhances your searches to bring back highly targeted results. Aware works in the background, learning from you in a number of ways:

  • Keyword Searching. With every search on your topic, Aware captures your search words and uses them to enhance your searches and filter out irrelevant results.
  • Search and Save. Save good search results into a topic collection by clicking the “+” button that’s next to the result. The result is saved, and Aware uses it as a good example of your topic. Find a result that has your search terms in the wrong context, and click the “-” button to tell Aware that result is off-topic.
  • Search from a Whole Vocabulary. Sometimes you have a set of terms in mind when you start. Create a new search, type them all in and click “Aware Search” - Aware uses the list to find information for you. You can also add more terms later.
  • Search from Documents. Got a reference document on a subject you want to learn more about? You can import Word, PDF, PPT and other document types into Aware and search from it. Aware analyzes the document and searches for information on the document’s topic.

The Collection

Each research topic in Aware has a Collection tab where your results are saved. The Collection is a permanent record of your research - say goodbye to bookmarks! Aware stores copies of the results on your hard drive, in case the web page is removed or you are disconnected from the Internet. And if a webpage is already in a collection, Aware will automatically exclude it from future results for that search.

The Terms List

Aware presents you with a weighted list of key terms that it thinks best represents your research topic. Reviewing these terms is a great way to discover different ways to think about your topic and sparks new ideas for areas to pursue. Aware uses these terms to help target new results. If you disagree with the list, you have the option of changing term weights, adding new terms or removing terms by ignoring them.

Managing Information

Organize your results and documents within Aware using a familiar folder structure. “Projects” can contain any number of “Searches” and “Folders” to organize your research. “Searches” are where you actively search for new information – with each Search independently understood by Aware. Folders (and sub-folders) are a convenient way to store information you might want to share. You can also move documents around using drag and drop.

A special “File Later” folder is provided as a catch all place to store results until you file them appropriately at a later time. This helps capture information on the fly when you are focused on some other topic.

Import/Export

Share your work with another Aware user or transfer your research between work and home computers with the Import/Export feature. Export saves all the data about a Search to a single zip file, and Import adds it back to Aware just as it was. You can also export Folders or all the data you have in Aware. Export will save to any external media that is recognized by the PC as a separate drive, such as a USB key or floppy.

Search Properties

Change which sources you search and change the results analysis using the Search Properties. You can select sources from a checklist and Aware will send queries to each source every time you search, deduplicating results that return. You can also change the number of queries sent – the more queries sent, the more broadly across your topic a search will look. Change the depth ratio to increase the quality of the results that Aware brings to the top.

Ignoring URLs and Sites

Research often brings up the same Web site again and again. Aware lets you check a box on a result to either ignore the specific Web page or all pages from that site. This can come in handy when a webpage is not useful but keeps reappearing in search results, or if it is useful but you don’t want to keep seeing pages from that site.
