General FAQs
What is Aware?
Aware is a PC application for performing
topic focused research on the Internet. You can gather information more
efficiently because Aware learns what topic you’re researching and
targets your search results to that topic.
Who should use Aware?
Aware is best for people who need to
gather a lot of information about their research topic quickly and
efficiently. Aware is great for marketing professionals, librarians,
intelligence gatherers and students.
What are the system requirements for Aware?
Minimum system requirements for Aware are:
Windows 2000 SP3, XP SP1 and higher (Win98
is not supported)
Microsoft .NET Framework v1.1
Pentium III, 600MHz or better
256 MB of RAM
20GB Hard Drive
Screen resolution of 200dpi or less.
What is the Microsoft .NET Framework?
The Microsoft .NET Framework is the new
standard for building applications for Microsoft Windows. All new versions of
the Windows Operating system will include the Microsoft .NET Framework and it
is included as part of Office 2003. If you do not have the framework
installed, the Aware installer will download and install it.
What other systems and browsers will Aware work with?
Aware currently has an optional toolbar
plug-in for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later. At this time, no other
browsers are supported. Aware also does not support the Mac at this time.
Why do I get the "Cannot update sources" message?
Aware downloads search source interfaces
to keep them up to date. If Aware cannot access the update server you will
get that message. Look into whether your Internet connection is through a
proxy server and use the Tools menu to make the appropriate setting.
Alternatively, check that your operating system has the needed service pack
updates (Windows 2000 needs SP3, Windows XP needs SP1 or higher) by using the
"Windows Update" feature from the Windows Start menu.
Using Aware FAQs
What is the difference between a Project and a Search?
Projects are convenient ways to organize a
set of Searches. For example, if you are researching stem cell research, you
could set up a Project named "Stem Cell Research" and creates
separate Searches for "Government Regulations" and for
"Bio-Ethics" to research these different aspects of stem cell
research separately. Note that each Search maintains its own unique context
and is not shared with any other Search. You can share documents across
Searches using Drag & Drop.
Do I have to rate my search results?
No. Like the search results, Aware learns
over time and the terms list is there only if you want to fine tune what
Aware has learned.
Do I have to rate terms?
No. Like the search results, Aware learns
over time and the terms list is there only if you want some fine tuning
control over what Aware knows.
Will my work be saved?
Yes. Aware is transactional, meaning all
the results and actions you perform will be there the next time you run
Aware. This is a great way to pick up your research at a later time if you
have to leave or get interrupted.
How can I copy results and document info into the Windows
clipboard?
Copy the information by looking at the
properties for a document. Right click on the document abstract text, and
choose "Properties" to open the properties dialog. You can select
and copy any of the text in the dialog to the Windows clipboard.
How can I share my work with others?
The Export feature of Aware allows you to
export all the work you’ve done on a search into a .zip file. Just
email that .zip file to another Aware user and they can Import it into their
copy of Aware and pick up where you left off.
What is the IE browser toolbar for?
The Aware toolbar for Microsoft Internet
Explorer makes it easy to capture web pages as you browse. If you open a
search result and navigate to another page within that site, you can capture
that new page into your search collection, or into the File Later folder for
later review, with one click on the toolbar.
